Merry Christmas! Wishing you peace and joy from all of us at NHADA.

Longtime NHADA exhibitor Beverly Weir of Thomas R. Longacre Antiques has a wonderful display of Christmas antiques at The New Hampshire Antiques Show each year; this image shows part of her display at our 2025 show.

O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum...These spun cotton ornaments were produced in Germany between the late 1870s and 1920s as a cottage industry. Many pieces are animals and people, especially children dressed to indicate different activities. Shown here is a display from the booth of Betty H. Bell Antiques at the New Hampshire Antiques Show this past summer, featuring a circus poodle embellished in a blue and yellow crepe paper jacket and red jester collar, as well as a “prancing pony” and a boy in a red night shirt and cap holding a mouse.

“It is hard to imagine how these pieces have survived for more than one hundred years, but they evoke happiness and the joy of celebrating with your loved ones during holidays. That is what drew me to specialize in antique holiday items.” —@bettyhbell

As late as the early 20th century, many people could not read, so trade signs took the shape of objects to inform potential customers of the proprietor’s expertise: horseshoes for blacksmiths, a tooth for a dentist, figural boots for shoe repair, and, as in this case, eyeglasses for optometry. This turn-of-the-century double-sided, hand-painted, and electrified optometrist trade sign was previously offered by NHADA dealers Michael Ogle and Diana Douglas of American Garage Antiques @americangarageantiques, who describe it as one of the most exceptional examples they have handled in their 35 years as folk art dealers.

“Antiques work in unison with design in almost every genre. Antique folk art, objects, weathervanes, and so forth bring an individuality to any and all ‘new’ spaces.” —@americangarageantiques

Double-sided optometrist trade sign with lighted eyeglasses, American, circa 1915. Constructed of a metal frame with hand-painted eyes, all in a multi-layered gilt and painted surface.

Featured NHADA Dealer: American Garage Antiques l Grand Rapids, Michigan.
